Tapping the Resource of Commitment

What is commitment? Here is an example of what commitment is: True friendship involves commitment. In other words, a good friend feels a responsibility toward you, and he really cares about you. Of course, such commitment is two-way, and it requires hard work, and sacrifice on both sides. But the rewards are worth the effort. Ask yourself, ‘Am I willing to give of myself, my time, and my resources for my friend?’ Remember, to have a good friend, you first need to be a good friend.

What does the word commitment suggest? It usually evokes a strong sense of intention, and focus. A statement of purpose or a plan of action typically accompanies it. Very often, we utilize this word in regard to proclamations we may make about the seriousness of our relationships.

The truth is, you really don’t know what tomorrow will bring, or the day after that. No one can control the future. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that some unforeseen occurrence will take place.

“Commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the serious promise to press on, to get up, no matter how many times you are knocked down.” — David McNally

Commitment has nothing to do with how a thing will or will not be accomplished. Commitment is simply, powerfully without question, what you say will be done. The how of it all doesn’t matter at all to the making of the commitment itself! Commitment has nothing to do with how. Commitment is what will happen, no matter what unforeseen takes place.

You can be committed to failure or committed to success. It’s up to you.

You are always committed to something. The only question is what?

If you are more committed to your comfort zone than you are to achieving your goals, you will be continue to be comfortable, and you may or may not accomplish your goals. In fact, you might be so committed to your comfort zone that your goals become impossible, for there are times when we must get out of our comfort zone in order to reach our aspirations.

Have you ever given a speech in front of a large group of people? It’s considered by most psychologists to be the number one fear of all time. Basically it is called stage fright. Why do you think that is?

It’s because most people have a huge fear of looking bad and they suffer from anxiety. Can you imagine anything worse than making a fool of yourself in front of hundreds of people? Would you be willing to be introduced with great fanfare to a big audience and then let them all down?

To think about:

Consider what the speaker is committed to. In the case of people scared to death to speak in front of a large group, those people are committed to looking good, to doing it right and not to fail. They are locked in their comfort zone and that’s what they’re really committed to.

Commitment is indeed very powerful. Have you ever met anyone committed to failure? Have you ever seen an entire company or enterprise committed to success? It’s amazing. You can almost feel their commitment. And it’s not just superficial optimism either. You just know they’re going to succeed. It is the aura that they exude. And the reason you know that is that they are living and working their commitments.

Winners are committed to success and high achievement. Which person are you?
